Gonzo’s Treasure Map is a live casino game show created by Evolution and brought to life through augmented reality technology. It’s a re-imagined version of previous Evolution-made games, but it’s also completely unique among live dealer casino games. Evolution, the leading provider of live casino games, announced a tightly-packed release schedule for 2023. Several of these titles were described as new and improved versions of older releases that failed to meet expectations. One such older title is Gonzo’s Treasure Hunt. Based on a successful series of NetEnt online slot machines, Gonzo’s Treasure Hunt was an interesting little game based around revealing hidden prizes and bonuses. Notably, it’s also a highly advanced game show, powered by striking visuals and augmented reality technology.
For one reason or another, it never really took off in the same way several Evolution-made game shows have. As such, the company’s creative team went back to the drawing board and came up with Gonzo’s Treasure Map.
This “sequel” is largely the same as its predecessor. It’s a visually impressive speciality product that introduces a wholly new way to bet online. However, the gameplay has been tweaked and improved with the goal of making it more accessible and attractive to a wider audience. It looks great and feels even better to play – which is not surprising for a release of this pedigree. That said, the gameplay will make or break Gonzo’s Treasure Map, which is what we’ll be looking into next.
The whole Gonzo brand revolves around the theme of exploring unknown lands. As such, the game board looks like a big map that takes up most of the screen. A real dealer is there to guide you through announcements and callouts, and they’re joined by a 3D-rendered character – the titular Gonzo.
Anyway, the rules of Gonzo’s Treasure Map are quite “out there” compared to everything except the most innovative of live dealer game shows. The best way to explain how it all works is by going through a round step-by-step.
Start by placing chips on one or more of the segments of the map at the center of the screen. The map is essentially the playing board. It consists of 7 columns and 10 rows for a total of 70 betting positions.
This means that you can place up to 70 bets per round (though that’s not necessarily a good idea.) Each of these can be of a different size, which gives you a lot of freedom in how you want to approach the game.
You have 14 seconds to bet before each round. After this wagering period ends, you can’t bet again until the next round.
Once the game kicks off, three keyhole blocks are randomly placed on the board. These are used to kick off the Gonzo’s Treasure Map bonus round, which we’ll cover later.
A small slot at the top of the screen starts moving and drops five blocks onto the board. Each of these is always on a separate column of the board, which is something to keep in mind.
If a block lands on one or more of the positions you bet on, you win. If not, you lose. It’s quite simple. Two types of blocks can drop down, which determines the size of the reward.
– Gold Blocks multiply the stake placed on the winning position by 10x.
– Multiplier Blocks multiply the stake placed on the winning position by 20x.
Only one block can drop per column of the board, but the rows are randomly selected for every block.
If a Key stone appears on a position you wagered on and that exact position then wins, you advance to the Bonus round. If this position wins through a Multiplier block, all rewards in the subsequent bonus round are doubled.
When the Bonus round begins, Gonzo reveals another wall containing 70 different stones. Each of these is randomly assigned a multiplier that can be 25x, 50x, 75x, 100x, 150x, 200x, 500x, or a special Double tile. Lower multipliers are more common than bigger ones.
A large Ruby block will drop down from the top of the screen onto a random position. The Gonzo’s Treasure Map bonus round then immediately ends, and all participating players have their stakes multiplied by the multiplier assigned to the winning position.
If the Ruby instead lands on a Double tile, all multipliers on the board are doubled and the Ruby is dropped again. This continues until the Ruby lands on a regular multiplier.
The amount you win depends on only two things – the size of your stake and the type of block that was used to win. A regular Gold block multiplies your stake by 10, while the glowy orange one multiplies it by 20. That’s pretty much all there is to know about Gonzo’s Treasure Map payouts, barring the slightly more complex bonus round.
The bonus round does not have a strict payout limit. If you’re lucky enough to hit the Double tile several times the payout will continue growing exponentially. However, potential winnings are capped at $500,000, which is something to keep in mind.

Gonzo’s Treasure Map RTP is 95.26%, and there’s no real way to influence that. All betting options are statistically identical, but this isn’t a great RTP rate by live casino standards. We would say that’s one of the greatest weaknesses of the game as a whole. Especially considering the fact that Treasure Hunt offered 96.56%

The most eye-catching feature of this game involves the visuals and its absolute commitment to the Exploration theme. Everything is vaguely styled after ancient civilizations of Central/South America and Mr Gonzo himself, the conquistador explorer himself. It looks quite great, but the “interactions” between Gonzo and the presenters can get old very quickly.
Speaking of interactions, Gonzo’s Treasure Map casino game comes with a live chat, which is expected. The same goes for the usual suite of QoL features such as audio/video settings, language options, and so on. However, compared to other Evolution games, it doesn’t do a great job of tracking previous results. No statistics are shown, which means its tough to get insight into the probabilities behind the game. Still – the results are always random and determined by RNG, which makes the game probably fair.
Our overall impression of Gonzo’s Treasure Map is that it’s a severely simplified version of Gonzo’s Treasure Hunt. Some will call that streamlining, others would call it stripping down. Either way, it’s clear Evolution is trying to make the game more appealing to players who don’t like getting too involved with things.
The results are quite mixed, in our opinion. On the one hand, it’s quite fun and lighthearted. The game is easy to get into and enjoy even though it’s quite volatile when you think about it. On the other, we feel that there really isn’t much to it. Sometimes it feels like it’s all flash and no substance. Actually playing the game feels more like a live slot machine than a game show.
Ultimately, though, our biggest problem with Gonzo’s Treasure Map is the sub-par RTP rate. There’s no accounting for taste, but low RTP is always bad, no matter your personal preferences.
You may want to try the game for the novelty alone. All in all, though, we’re not sure that it’s going to have more staying power than Treasure Hunt, and it feels like a bit of a step backwards.
