Mini-baccarat is a variation of baccarat that largely resembles the common card game found in most casinos, except that it slightly alters the rules surrounding the banker bet commission.

This makes it somewhat more streamlined than traditional baccarat, which is especially attractive to new players. Mini-baccarat is typically played on smaller tables, involves smaller betting limits, and features faster rounds due to some of the rule differences.

The goal of mini-baccarat is to predict which of two card piles – Player or Banker – will draw a hand total closer to 9. The main difference from classic casino baccarat is that there is no standard 5% commission on Banker bets. Instead, Banker bet wins with a total of 6 only pay half the usual reward.

Editor’s Note: Baccarat Naming Conventions in Online Casinos

Note that the variant of baccarat most commonly played in online casinos is actually called punto banco. That’s the version of the game in which players bet against the house instead of each other. This includes 99% of online baccarat games available, live or otherwise.

Remember – the true original baccarat is a multiplayer card game. The version familiar to most modern casino audiences is an adaptation made to be played in casinos, sort of like casino poker was made as an adaptation of traditional poker.

As such, mini-baccarat is technically a variation of punto banco, which is itself a variation of baccarat. However, since nowadays most people simply refer to punto banco as baccarat, we’ll do the same. It’s also why mini-baccarat and no-commission baccarat generally refer to the same thing in online casinos.
