Playtech has Quantum Roulette, Evolution has the acclaimed Lightning Roulette, and Authentic Gaming brought out XL roulette a few years back. Some might have written it off as Authentic “jumping on the bandwagon” of the whole idea of roulette with multipliers. And they would have been wrong for a few reasons.
XL Roulette improves upon the formula because it allows you to customize your experience. Basically, there are four different game modes which affect the size of the multipliers and the game’s overall volatility. You can play Azzurra Roulette XL as if it were a regular European roulette wheel, or you can crank it up for something entirely different.
We still maintain that this feature outclassed even Evolution’s great original. Besides, XL Azzurra Roulette still maintains a spectacular game show-like presentation. The result is one of the best live roulette games to play in Italian, hands down. It’s certainly the most versatile, and the attention to detail places it a cut above the rest.
Still, we’re here to talk about the Italian Azzurra Roulette, so let’s get right to it.
Without the extra features, modes, and multipliers, this is a straightforward live table roulette game. It’s live roulette as we know it and love it – just use the UI to place bets during the 20-second betting period.
Pretty much all standard bets are included, which is no surprise. However, straight-up bets on a single number can be significantly altered through the game modes. We’ll explain everything in detail in a moment. However, every other type of roulette bet except for straight-up wagers is identical to the standard rules. The wheel also only has one zero, which is good for players.
A random number of randomly-selected numbers are assigned multipliers every round. The size of the multiplier is also randomly generated, but it can go all the way up to 35x.
The idea is simple. You place straight-up bets, after which the game selects a few numbers to offer an increased reward. If your single-number bet happens to be on one of the lucky numbers, you win the multiplier instead of the usual payout. Other types of roulette bet are unaffected by this mechanic.
To compensate for the increased winnings, the base payout of straight-up bets is decreased. Traditionally, single-number bets win 35:1. However, in Azzurra Roulette XL, this can be decreased for a chance to win multipliers.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because the idea has been used in other games before. However, here’s where Authentic Gaming Azzurra Roulette XL becomes really interesting.
The base payout of straight-up bets and the number of multiplied numbers is determined by your game mode.
There are four options in total.
Note that the Lucky Numbers are different depending on which mode you’re using. Basically, every mode gets its own number regardless of the other 3 modes. They will all appear on the big screen behind the presenter.
For example, let’s say player bets are closed and a new round is about to begin. Lucky Numbers will appear behind the presenter in three rows. The numbers on the top row are relevant for XL mode. The middle row is relevant for XXL mode, while the bottom numbers are Lucky for those who play XXXL Mode.
However, only one ball spins, and the result of the spin itself applies to all players regardless of their chosen mode.
The payouts in Azzurra are just what you would expect – industry standard in most cases. Obviously, this isn’t necessarily true for straight-up bets on a single number. If you turn on one of the XL modes, the base payouts are decreased. However, you have a chance of winning up to 500x. Check out the paytable below for more details.

According to Authentic Gaming, Azzurra Roulette XL RTP is 97.30% regardless of which mode you’re using. We have our doubts – it’s probably slightly under that if you switch on XL modes. Still, it’s a fairly strong number as far as non-standard roulette games go.

The three XL modes are obviously the most special thing about this game. However, it does also come with a few other handy things you can do.
For starters, you can switch to the Racetrack view at any moment. This window allows you to place special sector bets. To the uninitiated, these are essentially combinations of bets which are placed based on the wheel’s layout. They’re an interesting choice as an advanced Azzurra Roulette strategy, but most live casino roulette games include them.
You can also use the stats windows to track results and hit statistics. They also do a good job at highlighting hot and cold numbers if you like to keep track of that sort of thing.
There’s not a lot that we can say about Azzurra Roulette that we haven’t said in other Authentic Gaming game reviews. Fundamentally, this software provider specializes in live roulette in ways no other providers do. Roulette is (almost) all they do, with dozens of tables available at most times.
In other words, Azzurra Roulette is a polished, well-made title. Much like the standard XL roulette, we were amazed by the fact that you can play it any way you want. If you don’t like the multipliers and prefer classic gameplay, just switch to Traditional Mode and enjoy! Conversely, if you’re the type of high-risk player who likes to shoot for big prizes despite big risks, XXXL Mode is the most volatile roulette game out there.
All in all, Authentic Gaming held up to its high standards for Azzurra Roulette XL. It remains one of the best ways to play roulette in Italian online.
