As such, it’s a standard game of roulette with 97.3% RTP and all of the usual betting options.

This review takes a look at how the game works and behaves as a unique VR casino product. The main question here is whether experiencing live roulette in VR is even a worthwhile experience considering the early stages of the technology and the unclear benefits. I’ll rate my personal experience playing the game and note whether it’s worth your time if you happen to have a VR set.

With their virtual reality Roulette platform, Medialive tries to redefine the term “Live Casino” and offer more than just authenticity. Virtual Reality technology fully immerses you into any media, allowing you to look around and interact with the images as if they were right in front of you. It’s exciting, futuristic stuff – but it’s also still pretty new. Especially in the context of using it for a live roulette table.

With that in mind, the idea here is simple – put a player with VR vision in front of a live roulette stream and let them experience it in new ways. On paper, it seems like the most authentic way to play roulette online. Especially since this is still an actual live casino table – the game is still played with real dealers and real roulette wheels. You just get to watch the action from the other side of the world – in VR!

In practice, though, VR technology still has a lot of quirks to iron out, and they’re quite obvious here. First of all, Virtual Reality equipment remains prohibitively expensive for everyone except enthusiasts. You need a powerful desktop computer to even run it, and the VR sets themselves are still quite costly. On top of all that, the actual uses of VR are very few. It’s mostly reserved for simple video games or interactive media experiences. In other words, you can only play VR roulette if you already have the necessary gear. Getting that equipment specifically to play roulette is not something a sane person would do.

Beyond that, the tech also has quite a few limitations. We’ll get to those later. For now, let’s take a look at how VR roulette works.

The flow of the game is quite familiar – it starts with a betting period, after which the dealer spins the wheel and determines the outcome of the round. However, the actual way you interface with the game will be quite interesting if you’re new to VR.

The game interface is based on the one you would see on a computer or a phone. It’s a table with various betting positions that allow you to place standard roulette bets. As you’re playing, the table will appear to float in front of you. You interact with it using your hands or the control wands, depending on the VR system you’re using.

Use this method to set the size of your stake using the chips on the size. Then, point to one of the betting positions to place a wager.

It should be noted that this method of placing bets is, while immersive, also very finicky. You need precise movements to place bets in roulette. For example, the difference between a Split and a Corner bet can be tiny in terms of space. Fortunately, you can also use your device’s controls to place bets the old-fashioned way.

Interface & Usability

Controlling anything in VR takes some getting used to, there’s no denying that. However, MediaLive took some steps to ensure that putting the chips where you want is easier. For example, available bets can also be shown as a sort of vertical table. The individual betting positions are also quite large so it’s harder to make mistakes. Also, every bet requires manual confirmation before it counts, so you don’t have to worry too much about making mistakes.

That said, most players will probably find it easier to just use standard mouse/touchscreen controls. Maybe it’s a matter of practice, but they’re just faster and more practical. Of course, the VR controls are more novel and interesting, which is always a factor to consider.

Graphics & Presentation

The visuals of VR Roulette Live are supposed to be the biggest selling point. If I’m being honest, though, they’re not as impressive as one would think given the implications of “virtual reality.”

First of all, the stream itself just appears to be the usual broadcast from standard Medialive roulette. This means it’s not really in 3D or all that immersive – at least not more so than most other live roulette games. In practice, it still looks like you’re staring at a flat surface. You’re just in a virtual 3D space while you’re doing it.

If you’re having difficulties imagining it, I’ll try to explain. The in-game interface, betting table, and UI elements do actually look “real.” It’s like they’re floating right in front of you. However, the stream of the roulette game just looks like a TV screen that’s also floating in front of you – not an actual table, wheel, and dealer.

Live Dealer Experience

If we consider the graphics, the actual experience of playing VR roulette is not all that different from traditional live casino games. It’s still a sort of one-way window into a casino floor – you just look through it from a different lens.

It’s also worth noting that VR is not for everyone, and probably never will be. Many people experience nausea as soon as they put on the visor, even if there’s no real movement. Bear that in mind before trying to play roulette in virtual reality.

Our Verdict of Live VR Roulette

Medialive VR Roulette platform is designed for players who are finally ready for something new after trying out pretty much everything on the market. However, I’m not sure the tech is quite there yet. It can be done, obviously, but the end result may not be as exciting as people would think.

Despite the sophisticated technology, the equipment is still full of quirks without adding too much to the actual experience. You need a lot if you ever want to actually play this game, but it ultimately isn’t too different from standard Medialive roulette.

Maybe one day somebody will make a worthwhile virtual reality live casino experience, but I honestly don’t think we’re there yet. As noted in my review, it just feels like you’re looking at a floating, low-fidelity screen in front of you. The interface can be fun to play around with, but you don’t see the wheel, ball, or the action in a different way.

Of course, VR Roulette still succeeds as a roulette game. It’s stable, playable, and offers industry-standard odds. However, it’s not at all impressive as a VR experience, and it’s not an improvement over the usual way of doing things.
