About Apricot Software

EDITOR’S NOTE: Apricot is the company formerly known as Microgaming. It was rebranded to Apricot in 2024.

The entire Microgaming game lineup was acquired by Games Global Ltd. in May 2022. Games Global now owns and operates the entire Microgaming catalogue, including independent studios previously publishing under Microgaming and their recent brand of live dealer titles, OnAir Entertainment.

To our knowledge, Apricot does not currently operate any live casino tables. However, this page and our game reviews will stay up for information purposes.

Too many times have we heard providers claiming they’re pioneers of this and that. They pretend to be at the forefront only as a means to gain clout amongst players and reviewers alike. Fortunately, Apricot doesn’t need to do this. The company was founded in 1994 as Microgaming, and they are one of the first true innovators in the iGaming industry. That same year, they came out with the first online casino software. Back when the pinnacle of gambling was driving to the nearest land-based venue, this was a revolutionary invention. From the get-go, they became invested in creating various slots, most of which are now legendary. Magic Moolah, anyone?

While already successful and head-and-shoulders above their peers, Microgaming still wasn’t content. That’s why they managed to pull off another world-first in 2004. Apparently, no provider before them dared to venture into mobile play. Despite the challenges, they started porting their slots and table games. Obviously, mobile gaming wasn’t as smooth back then, but anyone using a device with Symbian OS could easily download their software and start playing. In 2006, however, they ventured into the live casino market. Whilst not their forte by any means, Microgaming wanted to diversify. In 2015, they signed a deal with Evolution, which gave them a bigger platform for providing live casino services to the European market.

When it comes to licensing, they are well-equipped. Both the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) and the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) allow them to operate in a legal manner. These regulators have a reputation for being strict, so you know Apricot always plays by the rules. Additionally, they are well known for their partnership with Playboy. In the 2000s, they became the first and only software provider to have permission to release Playboy branded games. Of course, this also affects their live dealer games, which we’ll discuss in just a bit. All in all, Apricot is a player favorite, so you can rely on them to provide bug-free gaming content at all times.

Apricot Studio Locations Worldwide

Apricot has only three studios. The first and most significant one is located in Toronto, Canada. It’s their main base of live casino operations and is also the place where most of their tables are located. This gives them an opportunity to centralize their activities, while still having a nice talent pool of native English speakers nearby. We love their Canadian dealers, especially the ones with a slight Quebecois accent. They’re all polite and often tell funny stories to make the time between hands, rounds, or spins go by faster. The devil is in the details, and Apricot sure pays attention to all the little things.

Their other studio is in Argentina. Opening these facilities gave them a nice nudge in the right direction, right as they were preparing to enter the Latin American market. You won’t find a lot of tables here, aside from a few blackjack ones and the occasional Spanish-speaking one. Honestly, we wish there were more native tables. And that just so happens to be one of Apricot’s biggest issues – stagnation. Somehow, they’re always stubborn and only want to focus on things that are proven to work. To become the best live casino provider, you need to take a risk every now and then.

And last but not least — the studio in the Philippines. As is the case with most companies, this studio is used mainly for baccarat and Sic Bo. However, you’ll mostly encounter tables streamed from the Canada studio. Clients can pick the location when they order Apricot software, but you won’t see many European sites featuring Filipino tables from this brand. One thing we liked, though, was the ‘table full alert.’ Apparently, this is a mechanism that automatically alerts dealers to open new tables if the active ones are at full capacity. This is great for limited-seat games, so hats off to Microgaming.

Live Game Portfolio of Apricot

Apricot offers all the classic table games, but no variations whatsoever. These games have lots of extra features such as multi-table play and side bets. The ‘bet-behind’ function in their live blackjack games allows you to still be in the action while waiting for a seat. This means that you can bet on another player’s hand, although you are not the one who makes decisions about the hand. The entire live dealer suite offers many high-quality and graphic-rich perks, which include even alerting players that there is a seat available for playing. No longer will you be forced to stare at the screen. Just tab out and wait for the alert to sound off.

We’ve already mentioned this earlier, but the whole portfolio is just basic. There are no experimental variants, no regional versions, or anything else that providers such as Playtech and Evolution offer. Sure, the games themselves aren’t bad and the stream quality is amazing, but you can only have a certain amount of fun when playing something that already exists in a million different versions. LiveCasinos.com always prioritizes the basics, but we don’t like stale offers. If Apricot wants to rise beyond being average, they have to get their act together. Below is the full scope of their offer, as it stands.

Launched in 2010, Apricot’s Live Blackjack is a thing of beauty. It features 7-seat tables, along with amazing stream quality. We tested it on older computers, and the HD quality was still there. It’s worth mentioning that Microgaming has a very lightweight UI, so playing the game won’t eat up your RAM by any means. The dealers hand out cards from an 8-deck shoe, and you have 15 seconds to place your bets. If the table is full, you can Bet Behind and capitalize on another guy’s skill while you’re waiting. The only thing that’s confusing is the lack of live chat. Why doesn’t Microgaming allow players to talk to each other? Baffling, really. Of course, we can’t forget the Playboy Blackjack tables. It’s basically the same game, with the same rules and mechanics, except the studio is draped in Playboy logos, as well as red and black details. Also, the dealers are dressed in provocative costumes and wear bunny ears. Not bad, we have to say.

It’s not often that we see Call and Neighbor bets included in live dealer games. While it does seem like an obvious choice, we’ve seen many providers overlook them. Nevertheless, Apricot did their homework. One thing we really like about their Live Roulette tables is the choice of game views. Unlike other providers, who have a default camera-switch system, Apricot lets you pick your own perspective of the game. Also, they have one of the smoothest and most intuitive roulette UIs out there. Whether you’re a beginner or a grizzled veteran, you’ll certainly appreciate this casino-like version of roulette. It’s just smooth. Again, we have Playboy Roulette. Like with Playboy Blackjack, it’s just the base game with dimmed lighting, sexy costumes, and a change in color. If looking at pretty dealers is your cup of tea, then we definitely suggest you try it. Also, there’s the whole stats and analytics package that you get at every other Apricot table.

This game features three versions. You can also play Live Baccarat Turbo, which allows you to play more hands in a shorter timespan. While trying this game out, we noticed that there are lots of baccarat tables on the studio floor. It’s obvious that this game is a big hit, and it’s probably because of Apricot’s trademarked simple UI. By looking at the road map and other stats, you can easily know what’s going on and try your luck. The tables are marvelous, as there are augmented reality (AR) elements. Sometimes, we expect the content to just jump out of the screen. Live Baccarat and Playboy Baccara are also nice choices if you prefer to play at a slower pace. If you’ve never played baccarat, these are the best entry-level tables out there. Side bets are plentiful, including the iconic Dragon/Tiger one. It’s also nice to see you can play at multiple tables at the same time.

Currently, there’s just one poker game - Live Casino Hold’em. While we always like to see a wide array of choices, Hold’em is the right choice if you were just to focus on a single variant. You’re basically playing against the dealer, not other players. This makes Live Casino Hold’em a great pick for all of you who like fast-paced play. And we all know how annoying it is to have to wait for other players to make their decisions. You can also see stats, hand history, and everything else that goes into a nice poker duel. Too many providers overcomplicate things, but Apricot seemingly never falls into such a trap. As great as the game is, we just can’t help but be irritated by Apricot’s failure to improve on this aspect. They can easily expand their poker portfolio and include other variants. If you’re in for the quantity, you should take a look at another live poker provider. For now, we will try to be content with MG’s Hold’em tables.

The only other game to play is Sic Bo. It’s a basic variant of the game, but with a nice visual twist. Most of the screen is taken up by the Asian-themed betting interface. There, you can pick one or more bets, with a total of 50+ different combinations being available. We spent hours upon hours mixing and matching, just to find the winning formula. Unfortunately, we weren’t successful, but it was amazing and fun. The upper left and upper right corners are reserved for stats and history, while the center part shows the dice being thrown around in a glass ball. It’s all mechanical, so the human factor isn’t an issue. Just make sure you know that a Triple prevents you from winning Small, Big, Even, or Odds bets. Many players aren’t used to this approach, so we just wanted to give you a heads up. You can win at Apricot’s Live Sic Bo, just don’t get your hopes up after every stroke of luck.

This one was a bit tricky to track down. We were only able to confirm the existence of Chinese and Spanish tables, due to Apricot’s studios being in Argentina and the Philippines. Several of our readers have told us that they did see Portuguese, Turkish, and Russian tables, but we weren’t able to find any of them at any online casino. Whether they don’t offer the native-friendly service or if it’s just a local package, we can’t say for sure. Give us a heads up if you encounter more native tables, and we’ll gladly add them to the review.

Devices and Platforms Supported by Apricot

It’s funny how Apricot was the first company to venture into mobile gaming, but they still don’t let you play live casino games on your phone. The irony is just too much. Nevertheless, you will find no problems playing at blackjack, roulette, or baccarat tables on your PC or Mac. Since all games are coded in HTML5, you can watch the streams from any browser. Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera are all great options. Just to be safe, close other programs if you don’t want to experience the occasional lag. This only goes for computers with 8GB of RAM or less.

Our Summary – Apricot Game Provider

No matter how hard we try to draw a conclusion, Apricot is always puzzling to us. We just don’t know what to make of them.

Every single game they came out with is amazing. In fact, we would recommend Live Blackjack and Live Roulette to any beginner. The footage is amazing and everything is tidy and simple. Too many providers come out with messy UIs, while Apricot just makes it blend into the studio. We didn’t even notice it at times, that’s how good it is. The Playboy-branded games are a fun twist, and they all retain the same rules and formats.

On the other hand, Apricot’s live casino has been stagnant for too long. While they did outsource their European-based content from Evo, they haven’t used any resources or invested any sort of effort into coming up with something new. They only offer the basic version and there is no live chat at any of the tables.

If you’re a casino purist who likes to focus on the gameplay, then Apricot live dealer games will suit you. Those that want something new and different will walk away somewhat disappointed. It’s up to you, really.
